“I am announcing today that I will be stepping down as Leader of the Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island to allow the re-building process to continue.
“We accomplished a lot in the recent election, holding off a PC sweep and capturing Official Opposition status. However, in the absence of winning my seat and being able to sit in the Legislature, I need to put the party first and step aside. I fully intend to stay engaged as a Liberal and will be actively supporting the Liberal Party in District 17 in the next election.
“I am so proud of the diverse team of Islanders the Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island put forward in this election. The quality of candidates and the scope of the vision we set forth was truly inspiring for me as the party leader. The willingness of these Islanders to step forward under such short notice shows the extent of the confidence in the Liberal brand.
“The details on who the interim leader will be, and the timing of a future leadership convention will be announced shortly after the appropriate consultations have taken place. For my part, I wanted to make it clear that I am stepping down to allow that rebuilding process to transpire. It has been an exhilarating year, and I thank all the Islanders who stepped forward and embraced the vision we put forward.
“To Rob Henderson, Gord McNeilly and Hal Perry – congratulations on your well-deserved re-election. Your success on Monday is a testament to the positive impact you have had in your districts, and I have no doubt you will continue the vital work in holding this government accountable to ensure Islanders have better access to quality and timely health care, safe and affordable housing, and more opportunities for all residents to succeed and prosper. Thank you, as well, to Sonny Gallant for taking on the role of interim leader for the past several years; I know you will continue to be a strong advocate for residents even outside of the Legislature.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to all our party executive and members, the campaign team and the hundreds of volunteers for your unwavering support and dedication. Your hard work has revitalized the party and has positioned us well for a successful campaign in 2027.
“To all the Islanders who voted for us – I want you to know that your voice was heard, and your vote mattered. The Liberal caucus members you elected are proud to take on the role of Official Opposition and will continue to advocate for the issues that are important to you.
“But most of all, I want to thank my family, who gave me their full and undivided loyalty. Without those personal and unrecognized sacrifices, a run in politics is not possible. I am proud of all we have accomplished together as a party, and I look forward to continuing to work with you in the years to come.”
Sincerely, Sharon Cameron
