Liberal Plan: Improving Affordability for Young Families
Stratford, April 2 – New measures proposed by the Liberal Party will be of significant assistance to young families, says District 6 Candidate David Dunphy.
“In preparing our party’s comprehensive platform, we were very aware of the challenges facing young families. For that reason, we have proposed a Healthy Families Tax Credit Program for those who have children involved in extra-curricular activities.
“We know that parents want their children to succeed – and amateur sports, 4H and other activities promote health and well-being among young people.”
The Liberal Party has proposed a $1 million budget to provide this assistance to Island families begin in 2020.
Another aspect of family affordability in the Liberal platform is a commitment to provide up to $300 in rental accommodation support.
“Many young families starting out rely on rental accommodations – so this assistance will help to make life more affordable. Of course, this program will apply to most renters – but we also want to make sure we are there for families getting a start,” Dunphy said.
The Affordable Accommodation Tax Credit will begin in 2020, with a budget of $4.4 million annually.
“Over the past several years, Prince Edward Island has added about 5,000 full-time jobs. The Liberal plan is to add another 3,500 over the next several years. We know that there are more job opportunities in our diversifying economy – but we also recognize that many young families need a little assistance when it comes to affordability.
“Both the Healthy Families and Affordable Accommodation programs will help to meet those challenges,” Dunphy said.
