The Official Opposition is calling on the King government to release their housing strategy by August 31, 2023.
“This is the fourth housing minister under this government and Islanders are yet to see a strategy to address the growing housing crisis,” says MLA Gord McNeilly.
“Since 2019, no PEI Minister responsible for housing has developed or released a practical plan to help Islanders in need of housing. This leaves us thinking no work has been done.”
Yesterday, the new Minister responsible for Housing, Rob Lantz, said that he will be issuing a new housing strategy later this year. The challenges facing people in Prince Edward Island have gotten worse over the past year: with inflation and increasing interest rates, the loss of affordable housing, and with single income Islanders facing disproportionate barriers to their right to housing.
“What does later this year mean? How can Islanders wait patiently, again, when this government can’t and won’t commit to a release date?” says McNeilly.
“Enough is enough, government has had four years to develop a plan. Islanders cannot afford to wait any longer, so we are asking the new Minister to release his plan by the end of August.”
