SONNY GALLANT
Sonny Gallant is the Interim Leader of the Liberal Party of Prince Edward Island.
Representing District 24 Evangeline- Miscouche, Sonny Gallant was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2007 and re-elected in 2011, 2015, and 2019. In addition to his duties as Leader of the Third-Party, Sonny is currently the Critic for Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture; and Acadian and Francophone Affairs.
As Minister of Workforce and Advanced Learning (2017-2019), Sonny oversaw: improvements to the Work’s Compensation Act – adding protections for those suffering from PTSD; the elimination of post-secondary tuition costs for more than 1,000 low-income students; and the introduction of new supports for those seeking employment.
Sonny has also held several legislative leadership positions, including; Government House Leader (2010-2017), and Deputy Speaker (2015-2016), as well as Chair of the following Standing Committees: Education and Innovation; Infrastructure and Energy; and Fisheries, Transportation and Rural Development.
With deep roots in his community, Sonny has always done his part to give back to those around him. He previously served as Chair of the Miscouche Community Council, been a leader in the Scout movement, a board member of the Miscouche Legion Senior Citizens Home, and director of the Acadian Purchase Trust. He also spent years coaching both the area’s minor hockey and softball teams.
Sonny and his wife Linda are life-long residents of Miscouche. They have three sons, Chris, Nick, and Jonathan, and seven grandchildren.
